Voices from the Homefront

Join Hilda Koontz in the National Museum of Civil War Medicine's conference room (the historic Carty building) in downtown Frederick, MD. This multimedia event will include the civilian aspects of surviving a civil war during the 19th century, using letters, photographs, artifacts, and music, bringing to life the joys and sorrows of one Carroll County family's experiences during the Civil War. Hilda Koontz, a living historian and Fleagle family descendant, portrays the elder sister of four young men who went off to war to save the Union. For more information call 301-695-1864.
Researching the Civil War: A Lunch Lecture

Join Terry Reimer, National Museum of Civil War Medicine's Director of Research, and Dr. Bob Slawson, National Museum of Civil War Medicines's volunteer, as they give a lecture discussing the resources available for researching Civil War soldiers, surgeons, nurses, and hospitals. The lecture will focus on the pros and cons of research facilities and help direct people to the best place to begin their investigations. Please feel free to bring a bag lunch. Third Annual Early American Banjo Conference

Join the National Museum of Civil War Medicine and the Pry House Field Hospital Museum as they present their Third Annual Early American Banjo Conference at the Pry House. Event includes lectures and workshop on period playing styles, banjo construction and restoration as well as the lives of early performers. Cost for the three-day program is $40 per person and is limited to the first 40 players. A public concert will be held on Saturday, September 13, time TBD. For more information call 301-695-1864.
Banjo Contest/Concert

Join us for a re-creation of a famous banjo contest from 1857 as banjo players from around the country gather to compete and entertain. The contest will be open to the public. Admission for the concert is $5 for adults and $3 for children under 15. All proceeds will benefit the National Museum of Civil War Medicine and the Pry House Field Hospital Museum. Antietam Anniversary Weekend

Join the Pry House Field Hospital Museum as it presents Antietam Anniversary Weekend with various presentations on the aspects of Civil War medicine and the homefront, including a portrayal of a Union field surgeon, headquarters guard 9th NY Fire Zouaves a depiction of the camp life of soldiers, a demonstration of quilt piecing, and a performance of Civil War-era banjo music. 16th Annual Conference on Civil War Medicine

Mark Your Calendars! Sixteenth Annual Conference on Civil War Medicine October 3-5, 2008 Baltimore, MD The Museum staff is very excited to announce our 2008 Annual Conference on Civil War Medicine. The hotel accommodations are among the best we have ever seen. The Baltimore location boasts some spectacular attractions such as the USS Constellation, dining at the Inner Harbor, historic Fells Point, the Walters Art Museum, the Frederick Douglass Museum, the Flag House where the Star Spangled Banner was sewn and much more. We are also bursting at the seams with new and unique lectures on Civil War medicine, a Saturday bus tour that is still being developed with probable visits to Fort McHenry, President Station, Federal Hill, Civil War hospital sites and cemeteries. Antietam National Battlefield Illumination
Date: Dec 6
Join the Pry House Field Hospital Museum during the day for living history programs, barn and house exhibits before the Illumination. House closes at 5:00pm. Illumination gates open at 6:00pm at the entrance on Route 34. For more information call 301-695-1864.
