Divided by Conflict, United by Compassion: The National Museum of Civil War Medicine
by Terry Reimer

The latest book published by the NMCWM Press, Divided by Conflict, United by Compassion: The National Museum of Civil War Medicine, is now available. The book is designed to fill two roles– as a keepsake for Museum visitors who want something to bring home with them, and as an informative guide to the Museum and an introduction to Civil War medicine for people who have not had an opportunity to visit in person. The book covers all aspects of the Museum including its founding, the renovations, the exhibits, the collection, and all of the other resources provided to the public. In addition, numerous subjects such as surgeons, nurses, diseases, hospital ships, amputation techniques and many others are discussed.

Since its founding in 1990, the National Museum of Civil War Medicine has endeavored to tell the story of Civil War medicine so that the efforts of the men and women who served in a medical capacity would not be forgotten. It is told through the surgeons, nurses, and other caregivers who strove to heal the wounds of war, as well as through the patients who benefitted from their dedication. It is a story that still affects us today, since many of the advancements made during the Civil War, by both the Union and Confederate Medical Departments, form the basis of modern medical care.

One Vast Hospital: The Civil War Hospital Sites in Frederick, Maryland after Antietam
by Terry Reimer

Published by the National Museum of Civil War Medicine, this book is a winner of the 2002 Maryland Historical Trust Heritage Book Award.  The book includes a general introduction to Civil War hospitals and staffing, a list of the doctors and stewards at each Frederick hospital, and a history of the hospital sites including both a historic photograph and a present day photograph for each building. The city of Frederick, Maryland, played an important role in the Civil War, especially as a hospital center in the fall and winter of 1862. Immediately after the Battles of South Mountain and Antietam, Frederick was inundated with over 9,000 wounded and sick soldiers. There was one official hospital in existence, General Hospital #1 on the grounds of the Hessian Barracks, and six other General Hospitals and two hospital camps were quickly set up to accommodate the patients. Of the 27 buildings in Frederick which were used as hospitals in the Civil War, just over half are still standing.

The book also includes a complete Hospital Patient List from after the battles of South Mountain and Antietam, taken from original hospital records found at the National Archives and Records Administration in Washington, DC. This list contains nearly 10,000 individuals and includes their name, rank, regiment, company, complaint, date of admission, date discharged from hospital, and comments. The list is alphabetized and is a great source for genealogists and historians.
